Roll-Up Banner Image Resolution: Photos and Logos at Final Size

Illustrated planning checklist for banner image resolution.

The useful question is how much image detail remains at the size used on the banner. A file labelled 300 ppi does not necessarily contain enough pixels for a large photograph. Enlarging the same pixel image spreads its existing detail over a larger area. Ask the printer for the required effective resolution for the selected material, print process and viewing conditions.

Use a calculation to find the weak point

For a raster image, effective pixels per centimetre equal the image’s pixel width divided by its placed width in centimetres. A 2400-pixel-wide image placed 80 cm wide provides 30 pixels per cm. This is a calculation, not an acceptance threshold. Send both the pixel dimensions and intended placed size to the supplier for review. Cropping can reduce the available pixels further.

Treat logos differently from photographs

Request an original vector logo when available. A vector file can preserve clean paths during resizing, but a PDF or other container can still contain a low-resolution embedded image. Check the actual artwork rather than trusting the filename extension. Avoid taking a small logo screenshot from a social profile and enlarging it for the main headline area.

Make a review sheet

Record each image’s filename, pixel dimensions, intended size and source. Flag any image that has been heavily cropped or enlarged. Inspect a crop at intended physical size if possible, including a face, fine detail and high-contrast edge. A small on-screen preview can hide defects. Do not assume artificial upscaling reconstructs authentic detail that was absent from the source.

Approve with the printer

Send the final export and ask the supplier to identify resolution concerns before production. Keep the decision with the proof approval, especially if a limited source image must be used. InkSportPro’s banner material and production settings are confirmed per project, so this guide intentionally does not prescribe one universal ppi number for every order.
