Vector vs Raster Artwork for T-Shirt Printing

Vector artwork describes shapes mathematically, while raster artwork represents an image with pixels. Logos and photographs often arrive in different forms, and the best handoff depends on the design and production workflow. A file extension alone is not proof that a graphic will print cleanly.

What the distinction means

Vectors can be resized without the same pixel-grid limitation as a raster image; raster detail depends on available pixel information at the intended output size. A PDF can contain either kind or a mixture. Adobe explains raster and vector files. Saving a small image inside a vector document does not recreate missing detail.

Send the original when possible

For a brand mark, ask the designer for the original editable or production-ready file, including the handling of fonts and linked images. For a photograph, supply the original image rather than a screenshot from a presentation. Retain a visual reference so the producer can check that the received file looks like the approved design.

Explain the intended result

Include the final graphic dimensions, garment color and location. Identify elements that must remain editable, such as a date or sponsor name. If text is converted to outlines for reliable appearance, keep a separate editable master so corrections remain possible. Do not assume that a file opened successfully means all fonts and linked assets arrived correctly.

Let artwork review resolve uncertainty

Ask the producer to flag detail that cannot reproduce at the planned scale. Rebuilding a logo is a design task, not a magical export setting. When a revision is necessary, compare it against the original and obtain approval before production. The useful deliverable is a controlled graphic that matches the intended shirt, not a preferred extension chosen without context.

Practical checklist

  • Provide original artwork and a visual reference.
  • Check fonts and linked images.
  • State final dimensions and garment color.
  • Approve any reconstruction or simplification.
