T-Shirt Necklines and Collars: Crew Necks, V-Necks and Construction

A T-shirt neckline is the opening and surrounding construction at the top of the garment. Crew neck and V-neck describe its visible shape, while the collar or binding describes how the edge is finished. The shape should be chosen together with fit, artwork and intended use rather than treated as a cosmetic detail alone.

Start with the opening, not only the name

Two crew-neck shirts can have different opening widths and depths. A V-neck may also vary in depth and angle. Request dimensions or an approved reference sample rather than relying on a category label. Ask wearers to try the proposed garment, particularly when the shirt will be worn with lanyards or under another layer.

Understand the body-to-trim relationship

A neckline may use a separate trim material. Its stretch, dimensions and attachment affect how the opening sits on the body. Rib is commonly used as a trim structure, but naming it does not specify the completed collar. CottonWorks’ knit overview helps distinguish structure from the finished garment specification.

Leave usable space for artwork

A graphic positioned a fixed distance from a neckline will look different when the opening changes. Ask for placement measurements from an agreed garment reference point, not a casual instruction such as just below the neck. Check the relationship on the smallest relevant size as well as the main sample size.

Review the completed neckline

Look for an even appearance, comfortable contact and a shape that suits the intended fit. Include the neckline in any approved care review. A close photograph is helpful for construction details, while a worn view shows how the opening behaves. Neither should be replaced by a flat digital rendering when the final decision depends on fit.

Practical checklist

  • Confirm opening width and depth.
  • Identify trim material and construction.
  • Check artwork relative to the neckline.
  • Approve the finished neckline on a worn sample.
