GSM means grams per square metre: the mass of a defined area of fabric. It is an area-weight measurement, not the weight of the complete T-shirt. A larger garment uses more material, so two sizes made from the same fabric can have different finished weights while sharing the same nominal GSM.

Use GSM as one specification
GSM does not state fibre composition, knit construction or garment dimensions. Two fabrics with similar area weights can still differ in texture, drape and appearance. A buyer should therefore record GSM beside the other material details rather than use it as a substitute for them. A higher number is not a universal quality grade.
Avoid ambiguous comparisons
Ask whether the stated value refers to the finished fabric and whether a permitted variation is part of the specification. If a quotation describes a shirt merely as heavy or lightweight, request the measured basis. Do not estimate a fabric’s GSM by weighing a finished tee unless the material area and all additional components are accounted for.
Make a comparison card
Place samples side by side and record the stated composition, construction, GSM, color and finish for each. Add observations about drape, feel and coverage under the same viewing conditions. Keep those observations separate from measured test results. This gives a purchasing team a repeatable comparison rather than an argument about which swatch feels more substantial.
Choose a weight for the actual garment
A standalone promotional shirt, a layered staff tee and an activity top may need different combinations of coverage and feel. Review the material in the intended color and size. When requesting a quote, describe the use and acceptable sample characteristics; do not select a number first and assume every other requirement will follow.
Practical checklist
- Distinguish fabric GSM from complete garment weight.
- Record composition and construction beside GSM.
- Ask how the proposed value is verified.
- Compare actual samples in equivalent conditions.
