T-Shirt Fabric Composition: Cotton, Polyester and Blends Explained

Fabric composition states which fibres make up a T-shirt fabric, usually expressed as percentages. It is one part of a product specification, alongside knit structure, fabric weight, finishing and garment construction. A fibre label is a useful starting point, but it cannot independently establish how a finished shirt will fit or perform.

Common fibre descriptions

Cotton is a natural cellulosic fibre; polyester is a manufactured synthetic fibre. A blend combines fibres in stated proportions, so a description such as 60/40 is incomplete unless the fibre names are given in the same order. CottonWorks’ fibre reference distinguishes these fibre families. Neither a blend ratio nor a natural/synthetic label specifies the knit, finish or complete garment.

Read the complete description

A fabric described only as cotton or polyester leaves important questions unanswered. Ask for the percentage composition, the proposed style reference and any finishing information relevant to the intended use. When different panels or trims use different materials, clarify what the stated composition covers rather than assuming it describes every component.

Treat the use case as the comparison standard

For a staff shirt, consider how the fabric feels during the expected shift and how it looks after the intended care routine. For an activity shirt, include movement and the likely layers worn underneath. These are evaluation tasks, not properties that can be guaranteed merely by choosing a familiar fibre name.

Match the material to the decoration

Some decoration systems require particular substrates. Conventional dye sublimation, for example, is associated with suitable polyester fabrics; this does not make it a universal process for every cotton or dark-colored tee. Epson’s sublimation overview explains these compatibility limits. Ask the manufacturer to identify the actual process proposed for the selected material.

Separate general options from available supply

An encyclopedia can describe cotton, polyester and blends without implying that one supplier stocks every variation. For an InkSportPro inquiry, request composition and weight for the selected T-shirt style. Compare approved samples rather than importing a fabric assumption from a different garment or an unrelated online listing.

Practical checklist

  • Request composition percentages in writing.
  • Clarify fabric and trim coverage.
  • Check compatibility with the proposed print.
  • Approve the actual selected material.
