T-Shirt Color Matching: From Screen Artwork to Fabric Approval

T-shirt color matching is the process of agreeing what a color should look like on the selected garment and how that result will be approved. A screen image is a communication tool, not a physical color standard. The material, decoration and viewing conditions belong in the approval process.

Why the screen is only a starting point

Screens and print systems use different color spaces and have different reproducible ranges. A color visible on a monitor may not reproduce identically in print. Adobe’s color-space guide explains this distinction. Ask the producer which file profile it requires instead of assuming that one conversion solves every textile workflow.

Name the priority colors

Identify the primary brand color, any supporting colors and the relationship between the artwork and garment background. Where a physical reference is available, state exactly what it is. If a reference system is used, include the system and reference version rather than a number without context. Specify which elements deserve the closest attention.

Approve an actual printed result

Review a sample produced on the intended material and compare important versions together under consistent lighting. A photograph can document approval but may shift appearance between devices. Retain the physical reference when color consistency is central. If an exact match is not achievable, agree the acceptable alternative before bulk production rather than after delivery.

Control changes after approval

A different fabric, substrate color or production route may change the result. Record the approved sample and artwork version so substitutions can be reviewed deliberately. When a reorder is placed, provide the earlier reference again and ask whether the current material and process are unchanged. Consistency requires a shared reference, not memory.

Practical checklist

  • List priority colors and named references.
  • Follow the producer’s file-profile instructions.
  • Approve color on the actual substrate.
  • Review substitutions and reorders against the reference.
