Dye sublimation is a decoration process that uses heat to transfer suitable dyes into compatible material. For T-shirts, it is commonly associated with polyester fabrics. It should not be confused with every process involving a heat press, since film transfers and cut vinyl use different materials and workflows.

Check the substrate and base color
Conventional dye-sublimation inks do not provide an opaque white layer. White or light-colored compatible polyester material is therefore an important starting point for many applications. Epson’s sublimation guidance explains these limits. A dark final design on a white base is different from trying to print an opaque light graphic onto an existing dark shirt.
Distinguish a finished shirt from printed panels
A supplier may propose decorating a finished garment or printing fabric used to make the garment. The production route affects usable artwork area and the review of seams. Ask where printing happens in the sequence and which boundaries the artwork crosses. A flat design file cannot resolve every issue created when panels become a three-dimensional shirt.
Approve color on the actual material
Screen appearance does not replace a printed sample. Review important colors, fine details and solid backgrounds on the proposed fabric. If several shirt versions must coordinate, compare them together. Record the material and artwork reference used for approval so a later change in fabric is not treated as a purely administrative substitution.
Keep performance claims separate
A sublimated design does not independently prove that a shirt is moisture-wicking, UV-protective or suitable for a particular competitive requirement. Those claims need their own specification and evidence. For an InkSportPro inquiry, share the desired graphic coverage and selected style, then obtain confirmation of the proposed fabric and production method.
Practical checklist
- Confirm compatible material and starting color.
- Ask whether printing occurs before assembly.
- Approve a printed color reference.
- Do not infer fabric performance from print method.
