Custom-Made T-Shirts vs Decorated Blanks: What Changes?

A decorated blank begins as an existing T-shirt and receives additional artwork. A custom-made T-shirt is produced to a more detailed garment specification, potentially including its pattern and panel layout. The distinction matters because a logo mockup alone does not show how much control a buyer has over the underlying shirt.

Where the decisions begin

With a blank, the starting decisions usually concern available styles, sizes and colors. With a made-to-specification garment, the discussion can extend to measurements, seams and individual panels. Neither route automatically offers unlimited options. Ask which components are fixed, which can change and which changes require a different sample or quotation.

Artwork behaves differently on each route

A finished blank has existing seams and a fixed shape that the decoration must accommodate. Printing fabric panels before assembly can create a different design opportunity, but panel boundaries still exist. An all-over rendering should therefore be reviewed as a garment construction plan rather than a promise that every line will connect perfectly.

Compare the same scope

A low blank-and-print price is not directly comparable with a quotation that includes pattern development, custom labels or special packing. List each component separately. If a buyer does not need a unique cut, changing the pattern may add work without improving the intended use. If fit is central, a fixed blank may not solve the problem.

Choose the route that supports the purpose

An event identification shirt and a recurring branded apparel program can justify different levels of product development. Ask to see the actual garment measurements and a relevant sample before deciding. Record the approved construction as well as the artwork so a later reorder does not depend on remembering a photograph.

Practical checklist

  • Ask whether the garment exists before decoration.
  • Identify fixed and changeable specifications.
  • Compare quotations with matching labels and packing.
  • Retain the approved pattern or style reference.
